I agree with the author's statement that the way people look,dress and act reveals their attitudes and interests, thus by investigating people's appearance and behavior can one acquire a great amount of knowledge of a society's ideas and values. However, after a thorough meditation, a wise man
would agree that this above statement is not universally correct; they sometimes mask real thoughts of people. So in order to examin people's acts, there's more to be done.

First I must admit that the method mentioned above is in most cases useful. After all, it is people's attitudes and interests that guide their actions. It is human nature to smile when they are happy, wearing his favorite clothes,  and act what he thinks is right. People from Britain, for example, have a tradition to be gentle towards ladies.This fact together with the important role women plays in British history reveals a respect for women. Thus by examining appearance and behavior of its people, we can know a lot about the way of life which the society as a whole respects and values.

The appearance and behavior of citizens, however, can be deceptive. This
conclusion comes from two kinds of experiences. One of them is the pretentious nature of human beings, which has a tendency to dress fashionable wearings rather than they like, and do what others do instead of
what they thought correct. The other is that sometimes citizens in a country are deprived of freedom to dress and act, which always results from despotism.

For instance, most of the Italian people likes peace, but during The Second World War they are forced by the arbitrator to take up weapons and fight.  Also, in the same war the Jews have been ordered to wear a sign identifying their
race, which again illustrates my point that until people have a free hand to act,  and a mind free to think, the method will not work out.

One way to fix this problem is to study people's motives and attitudes from different kinds of resources, such as letters, language, or anything that conveys their thought. These materials are, to some extent, more reliable than
appearance and behaviors to reveal a society's ideas and values. In the modern society, internet as a access to people's thoughts should be considered as well, because people are more likely to be themselves on the internet.

To sum up, observing people's appearance and behavior has its use,but it is not suffcient and not always reliable. A deep research on society would require
investigations from other angles to construct a broader view of ourselves.

看完了第一感觉是稍微说的有点浅，文字很流畅，看着很舒服。
个人觉得，还有这么一个角度。前半句The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests.后半句说的是从主流的行为可以看出这个社会的价值和观念。
我认为可以从后半个命题出发，先说，
1。所谓社会的ideas and values应该是指它的主流观念，而大多数人的行为是主流观念在人身上的投影。例子就用英国绅士的例子。或者说NAZI当年全国都民族狂热，这能一定程度代表当时的社会价值
2.但是上面的东西只能从整体上有效，对于单个的个体，并不一定适合。就像LZ说的，由于很多人做的事情不是他们认为REASONALBLE的事情（我觉得这个词比CORRECT要准确一点），他们的穿着和行为可能只是一种从众行为。例子可以还用你英国绅士的那个，那个时代有身份的男人普遍 gentle and kind towards women这只能说是一种社会价值认同，但里面仍然有很多的人是不尊重女性的，Nazi德国时期的那些个人也不一定都个个是种族狂热，他们很多也都在深深的自责中生活。 Therefore their behavior is deceptive.
3.所以看社会中人的行为，可以一窥社会的主流ideas and value，但是针对到个人，就不那么管用了.最后就用LZ的那个，补救的方法是直接看看人们写的信等等
